Jon Stewart Compares Rick Sanchez to Michael Scott in Last Laugh

Jon Stewart compared Rick Sanchez to Steve Carell's character on "The Office" Monday night, four nights after the recently fired CNN anchor called Stewart a bigot and suggested that members of the Jewish faith control the TV networks.

Stewart opened Monday's "The Daily Show" episode spending several minutes on Sanchez's comments. While Stewart didn't wade in too deep on Sanchez's comments about his religion, Stewart specifically addressed Sanchez's opinion of his upbringing.

Sanchez told satellite radio host Pete Dominick Thursday, "I'm so happy he grew up in a suburban New Jersey home with everything that could you ever imagine."

"I do occasionally have my issues with Rick Sanchez and his program, but he nailed what it was like growing up in Central Jersey in the early '70s, the fortunate son of a single mother in the education field," Stewart said.

Stewart also showed his audience a compilation of clips comparing Sanchez with Carell's character Michael Scott, including shots of both wearing similar black hats backwards, both praising popular Internet trends (Sanchez, social media; Carell, Wikipedia) and both using the term "TMI," an acronym for "Too Much Information."

"They are the same guy," Stewart said.

Stewart also suggested his staff had prepared the compilation before Sanchez was fired Friday, saying it would be "mean" to air the entire tape, yet he gave his audience "a little taste."

"We weren't making fun of Rick Sanchez because of a slight to ethnicity," said Stewart. "We see him as a complex television character who is flawed but fascinating to watch every week."

Stewart showed some empathy for Sanchez's sudden downfall. "If CNN got rid of Rick Sanchez because they didn't like his show, fine, we weren't that crazy about it either," Stewart said. But for those comments? "I'm not even sure Sanchez believes what he's saying."

Stewart has previously frequently mocked Sanchez, sometimes by showing a CNN clip of Sanchez being shocked with a Taser.

CNN fired Sanchez Friday, the day after his interview with Dominick. Sanchez said Stewart is bigoted toward "everybody else that's not like him."

"He's upset that someone of my ilk is almost at his level," Sanchez told Dominick.

Sanchez also told Dominick that although Stewart is Jewish, he couldn't relate to the prejudice Sanchez said he had seen in his youth. Sanchez was born in Cuba and started working at CNN in 2004.

"I'm telling you that everyone who runs CNN is a lot like Stewart, and a lot of people who run all the other networks are a lot like Stewart, and to imply that somehow they, the people in this country who are Jewish, are an oppressed minority?" Sanchez said.

PS: Stewart does not "rip on everyone" as his supporters here keep saying. He rips on conservatives, Christians, Republicans, big business, and Jews.. and he only rips on Jews so no one will call him a bigot... which explains why he has totally flown off the handle into a passive aggressive frenzy over Sanchez's comments. If you can't see how defensive Stewart is being right now you are BLIND. Just because he's smiling doesn't mean Sanchez's comments didn't hit home. Read what Freud says about jokes, He was dead on. Stewart and Maher are both passive aggressive jerks who ultimately hate themselves and I'd bet any amount of money on that

Oh God someone shut this Stewart (real name Leibowitz) character up! I am so sick of this moron acted like he is a comedian when any intelligent person knows he is a wanna-be politician who uses jokes to influence politics in America. I'd rather be Michael Scott than Bill Maher, who is exactly who Stewart is like. Couple of ANTI CHRISTIAN, self righteous political zealots who can't even get a real network show because they are too disrespectful towards people. Hey Jon Stewart your whole show is "TMI". Have fun with all that bad karma you just created for yourself Jonny boy :D

You are so informative, I gained so much from your obviously critically thought out comments. You are my hero dopeydoper, one would normally have to go to the bowling alley to gain such insight. And to think you own a computer and know how to use it, keep up the good work!

It is not Stewart's fault Sanchez got fired. He rips on everybody and maybe some people don't share the same sense of humor he does. He works for a station called "COMEDY" Central, hence his leeway of getting away with making fun of people. Do you guys watch South Park at all? They've made fun of every single religion, race, disability and whatever else and guess what? They're on the same network! If you watch the show, Stewart rips on Jews too! Sanchez got fired because he works for CNN and he made those statements, CNN isn't a forum for you to rip on people, so that's probably why he got fired, or maybe his show is just bad. So stop blaming Stewart for this. This isn't an issue about Jews. This is an issue with Sanchez for being dumb enough to make those statement knowing he doesn't work for Comedy Central or Fox News. Stewart's show is satire, people understand that concept! God forbid that Sanchez kills himself over this and then you guys will be blaming Stewart for it too.

Sanchez's show was one of the weakest on CNN. He did not have the journalistic qualities, that many other commentators have, and I found his show quite superficial, and of minimal interest. He is more of an entertainer, than a journalist. No great loss, in my view, especially when he makes comments of the kind he did.

Sanchez sounds like he'd fit in at Fox News. They have no standards!

No, Fox is too good for him! Make him Chris Matthew's side kick! They both are equally liberal, so they can be like Howard Stern and Robin Quivers!

Jon steward should at least give some credit to Rick Sanchez for telling the truth............Because my understanding of Jon steward was that he like to help the under dogs,or was that just an act....And now he is trying to avenge the likes of Ed Koch" when Rick Sanchez interviewed him,and accused him of the Jewish power and favoritism.......

First off, you obviously don't know Jon "Stewart" too well if you can't spell his last name correctly, despite it being repeatedly over and over in the article. I'm normally not a stickler for spelling but it really makes me question your intelligence when the it's in the article a few times. If you read the article, or watch The Daily show, you would know that Jon "Stewart" didn't think Sanchez should of been fired for the comments he made about Stewart.

I just FIRED CNN! I don't like Stewart and I don't think he's funny. Just because he's Jewish - so what? Don't mean jack-crap to me either. Just because he grew up poor - big deal. Now, he's got the big boys crying for him on his little pity pottie. He can dish out the barbs - but he can't take 'em! He didn't like what Sanchez said, so he got him fired. But it's OK for him to say anything else about anybody else huh? And then, he wants us to shed some tears for him and his religion - BALONEY! I have always like Rick Sanchez and so did millions and millions of others. Rick's list is the only CNN show I can stand to watch. At least Sanchez has the GUTS to stand up and speak out against the redneck know-it-alls. Now, CNN is gone from my channel list! And the person who fired Rick? I hope HE GETS FIRED, or goes broke!!

Anybody who lives in the real world knows the truth....so many people with chips on their shoulder, or should I say trees. It's everywhere and the oppressed (whether they're still oppressed or not) hang on to those trees and proudly display them, daring anybody to knock 'em off. If not for those trees where would they get their attitudes? "Why can't we just all get along?" is a comment none of them want to see go away.
